Club Tournaments and Club Matches

Club Tournaments

The Summer tournaments are open to all Senior Members. These are played either as Knockout Rounds, or in a Round Robin format, following random draws for the initial ties and Doubles pairs. The Committee may occasionally use seedings for the draws, to achieve a more even competition.

Tournament formats

This year, the Ladies & Men’s Singles, the Veterans Singles (over-60’s) and all three Doubles tournaments, will be drawn as Knockout Rounds.

The club aims to hold at least one Saturday Finals Day during the summer, although dates are subject to change because of weather conditions, holiday periods and unforeseen injuries. Any proposed Finals Days will appear on the News page of the website.

Deadline dates will be set by which each round should be played. Players are asked to play their matches by these deadlines to keep the tournaments on schedule. All participants should be pro-active in arranging match dates.

Tournament Rules

1) Matches are to be played as 2 normal tie-break sets (tie-break to at least 7 points, by 2 clear points), plus a Championship tie-break if needed (1st player or pair to at least 10 points, by 2 clear points).

2) All Finals are to be played as 3 normal tie-break sets (tie-break to at least 7 points, by 2 clear points).

3) All games will play a “sudden death” point on 2nd Deuce.

4) If on a serve, the ball clips the net but still goes over and is "in", the ball is a “let” and the serve is replayed. A let cannot be challenged and there is no limit to the number of lets on a serve. Both opponent and server may call a let.

5) When a ball from another court enters the playing area, any player on the court affected may call a “let” as soon as the player becomes aware of the ball. The player loses the right to call a let if the player unreasonably delays in making the call.

6) For line calls, each player or doubles pair is responsible for calls on their side of the net; “out” and “fault” calls must be made promptly after the ball has bounced and loudly enough for opponent(s) to hear. If a player is in doubt about a call, the benefit of the doubt must be given to their opponent(s).

7) If a player incorrectly calls the ball “out” on their side of the net, and then realises that the ball was good, the point should be replayed, unless it was clearly a point-winning shot (i.e. a shot that the receiving player could not have successfully returned had they known the ball was good).

8) If a player is injured during a match and cannot continue, they must forfeit the match and their opponent(s) will progress to the next round.

9) If a player cannot play the tie by the agreed dates, they must forfeit the match to their opponent (for Singles), or to a Lucky Loser (for Doubles), at the discretion of the Tournament Organizer.

10) The winning player(s) should send an email to the Tournament Organizer with the match result.

The Tournament Organizer this year is Sue Leonard, at susanleonard@sky.com

Club Matches

The Club arranges friendly matches against other local clubs during the Summer months for Ladies Doubles, Men’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles. While these matches are usually held on a Tuesday or Thursday morning, we are also open to the possibility of playing in the evening, or at weekends, if these times prove suitable for our members and our opponents.

Matches comprise eight tie-break sets, with each pair playing four sets against pairs from the opposing club (two sets against one pair, and two sets against the other pair). The matches are always memorable occasions and provide a great opportunity to play at different venues, competing against new players, in a friendly but competitive spirit.
