Club Tournaments and Club Matches

Club Tournaments

The Summer tournaments are open to all Senior Members. These are usually played as either Round Robin Pools or Knockout Rounds, with random draws for the initial ties and for the pairs in the Doubles competitions.

Winners for 2023

Ladies Singles - Rose Howell

Men’s Singles - Richard Butcher

Men’s Veteran Singles - Chris Ponulak

Ladies Doubles - Rose Howell & Jane Wells

Men’s Doubles - Chris Ponulak & Dan Edmunds

Mixed Doubles - Shirley Wicks & Rohan Sehgal

Tournament formats

This year, the Ladies & Men’s Singles, as well as all three Doubles tournaments, will be drawn as Knockout Rounds. The Veterans Singles will be open to ALL members who are 60 or over in 2024 and will be played as a Round Robin Pool.

We are aiming to hold two Finals Days this year, the first on Sunday 21st July and the second on Sunday 8th September. Dates are subject to change because of weather conditions and the court re-surfacing. Tournament finalists are expected to be available for these dates if their final is scheduled to be played.

Deadline dates will be set by which each round should be played. Players are asked to play their matches by these deadlines to keep the tournaments on schedule. All participants should be pro-active in arranging match dates.

If you know you will be away for a considerable time during the summer months, please do not enter the tournaments this year.

Tournament Rules

1) Matches are to be played as 2 normal tie-break sets (tie-break to at least 7 points, by 2 clear points), plus a Championship tie-break if needed (1st player or pair to at least 10 points, by 2 clear points).

2) All Finals are to be played as 3 normal tie-break sets (tie-break to at least 7 points, by 2 clear points).

3) All games will play a “sudden death” point on 2nd Deuce.

4) If on a serve, the ball clips the net but still goes over and is "in", the ball is a “let” and the serve is replayed. A let cannot be challenged and there is no limit to the number of lets on a serve. Both opponent and server may call a let.

5) When a ball from another court enters the playing area, any player on the court affected may call a “let” as soon as the player becomes aware of the ball. The player loses the right to call a let if the player unreasonably delays in making the call.

6) For line calls, each player or doubles pair is responsible for calls on their side of the net; “out” and “fault” calls must be made promptly after the ball has bounced and loudly enough for opponent(s) to hear. If a player is in doubt about a call, the benefit of the doubt must be given to their opponent(s).

7) If a player incorrectly calls a “fault” or calls the ball “out”, and then realises that the ball was good, the point should be replayed, unless it was clearly a point-winning shot (i.e. a shot that the player could not have successfully returned had they known the ball was good).

8) If a player is injured during a match and cannot continue, they must forfeit the match and their opponent(s) will progress to the next round.

9) If a player cannot play the tie by the agreed dates, they must forfeit the match to their opponent (for Singles), or to a Lucky Loser (for Doubles), at the discretion of the Tournament Organizer.

10) The winning player(s) should send an email to the Tournament Organizer with the match result.

The Tournament Organizer this year is Sue Leonard, at susanleonard@sky.com

Club Matches

The Club arranges mid-week friendlies with other local clubs during the Summer months for Ladies Doubles, Men’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles. Matches usually take place between 10am and 2pm.

Matches comprise eight tie-break sets, with each pair playing four sets against pairs from the opposing club (two sets against one pair, and two sets against the other pair).
