COVID-19 UPDATE    4 November

Despite the LTA and other bodies lobbying for some form of outdoor tennis to be allowed during the second lockdown period, legislation has now been passed to prevent it. Farnborough Tennis Club will therefore be closed to all members until the lockdown is lifted.

Let us all hope that the virus can be brought under control during this period. Meanwhile, stay safe, keep fit and be ready to return to action from 3 December.

 COVID-19 UPDATE    28 July

We are pleased to announce that Club Play will start again, from Saturday 1st August. Club Sessions will be on SATURDAYS    9am - 12.00pm

MONDAYS   1.30pm - 4.00pm

WEDNESDAYS   1.30pm - 4.00pm

On these occasions, the booking system will not apply. You turn up and mix in with whoever is there. All three courts will be available for doubles play. Members must sign in, so that we have an accurate record of attendance. Club balls will be provided, as long as there is a committee member there to open the clubhouse. The clubhouse and patio area will NOT be open, except for access by a committee member.

Outside of these club sessions, the booking system will continue to apply and MUST be used. You cannot just turn up and play, even if courts are empty. You MUST book in advance.

Please note the following points:-

The protocols we have put in place MUST be followed by all members. Social distancing and good hygiene are paramount for the safety of all. Please read the protocol notice (on the left of this page) and follow the rules. A copy of our detailed COVID-19 Policy can be found by clicking menu at top left of this page.

Any member who contracts the virus, having played on our courts, should notify a member of the committee immediately.

Nigel Holmes steps down as Chairman after 15 years

Nigel originally intended to serve as FTC Chairman for just 3 years, but was persuaded by popular demand to extend his tenure.

Now, Nigel has decided that the time is right for him to hand over his responsibilities. Our new Chairman is Stephen Wade.

Nigel has overseen many important developments at the club, including the re-surfacing of the courts (twice), the replacement of our clubhouse and negotiating a new lease with Bromley Council.

In recognition of Nigel's many years of service to the club, we presented him with an engraved wine cooler and some wine to go in it.

Mince Pie Tournament

"Mince Pie" competitors

As 2019 came to a close, we had our traditional "mince pie" tournament. It turned out to be a sunny, if not very warm, Sunday morning.

In a friendly but competitive spirit, 17 members took part, spurred on by the chance to win a bottle of wine and to have their photo taken.

Brian Keegan deserves a special mention for managing to be runner-up in both the men's and ladies' sections, for reasons which are too complicated to explain here. It is unlikely that this feat will ever be repeated.

However, the overall winners were June Beesley and Terry Beedell. Congratulations to them!

We thank Jane Wells for organising the event and all those who brought lovely food, including the mince pies. The tournament schedule was put together by Peter Sargent, who once again failed to fix the result he wanted.

   Mens Singles Champion 2019

                   David Stirk

Many congratulations to David Stirk who retains his Singles title for another year. David defeated Chris Ponulak in a repeat of last year's final. The quality of the tennis did both players proud and it  was not difficult for the spectators to see why David and Chris have contested the final for the past two years and have both been previous champions of the club.

                   Finals Day

We had a beautiful morning on which to complete the first two finals of our summer tournament. In the Mens Doubles Final,

David Stirk and Brian Keegan defeated

Paul Taylor and Paul Stainsby, 6-4, 6-0.

In the Mens Veterans Final, Chris Ponulak defeated Peter Sargent 6-0, 6-0.

For a detailed report on these two matches, read the October article in the Farnborough Local (click on your left).

We are expecting the remaining Finals to be played soon.

In 2015, FTC was 40 years old. To celebrate our 40th anniversary a special Dinner was held on Saturday Evening, 3rd October, at Cherry Lodge Golf Club in Biggin Hill. Current members were joined by many former members, including several who were there at the very beginning of the Club's history. Our thanks go especially to Margaret Gooden and her family for organising the event. Margaret and her late husband Colin Shakspeare were two of the founder members back in 1975.
