 Latest News for 2020

You may have seen that the LTA has today issued fresh guidance to tennis players and tennis clubs.

Farnborough Tennis Club will need to seek approval from Bromley LB before we make any changes to the policies we introduced from 22 May.

Until members are notified otherwise, our courts are only open for singles play (or doubles for members of the same household). The protocols printed below remain in place.

The only change we have made so far is to make all 3 courts available to book for periods of 90 minutes.

Remember that the courts are open

  • Only for those members who have signed up to the new booking system.

  • Please read the notices below and follow the rules.

  • Even if the courts look empty, you must NOT turn up to play without booking first.

  • Bookings can be made up to 2 days in advance.

      COVID-19 UPDATE

Bromley LB has given permission for our courts to re-open, but only under strict conditions.

Only courts 1 and 3 will be available. Singles only, or doubles within a group who share a household.

There will be a booking system put in place which you must use, even if the courts appear to be free.

We have strict protocols in place, to do with keeping us all safe. If these are not followed, Bromley LB will force us to close. A copy of the new protocols can be found below.

For the time being, the season 2019/20 is being rolled over, so that existing members will not need to renew their membership. This arrangement is temporary, until the end of June 2020.

We will not be accepting any new members for the time being, but will keep this under review.

To summarise:-

The courts are open to members from 22 May but ONLY to members who have pre-booked.

Read and comply with the protocols below.

Nigel Holmes steps down as Chairman after 15 years

Nigel originally intended to serve as FTC Chairman for just 3 years, but was persuaded by popular demand to extend his tenure.

Now, Nigel has decided that the time is right for him to hand over his responsibilities. Our new Chairman is Stephen Wade.

Nigel has overseen many important developments at the club, including the re-surfacing of the courts (twice), the replacement of our clubhouse and negotiating a new lease with Bromley Council.

In recognition of Nigel's many years of service to the club, we presented him with an engraved wine cooler and some wine to go in it.

Mince Pie Tournament

"Mince Pie" competitors

As 2019 came to a close, we had our traditional "mince pie" tournament. It turned out to be a sunny, if not very warm, Sunday morning.

In a friendly but competitive spirit, 17 members took part, spurred on by the chance to win a bottle of wine and to have their photo taken.

Brian Keegan deserves a special mention for managing to be runner-up in both the men's and ladies' sections, for reasons which are too complicated to explain here. It is unlikely that this feat will ever be repeated.

However, the overall winners were June Beesley and Terry Beedell. Congratulations to them!

We thank Jane Wells for organising the event and all those who brought lovely food, including the mince pies. The tournament schedule was put together by Peter Sargent, who once again failed to fix the result he wanted.

   Mens Singles Champion 2019

                   David Stirk

Many congratulations to David Stirk who retains his Singles title for another year. David defeated Chris Ponulak in a repeat of last year's final. The quality of the tennis did both players proud and it  was not difficult for the spectators to see why David and Chris have contested the final for the past two years and have both been previous champions of the club.

                   Finals Day

We had a beautiful morning on which to complete the first two finals of our summer tournament. In the Mens Doubles Final,

David Stirk and Brian Keegan defeated

Paul Taylor and Paul Stainsby, 6-4, 6-0.

In the Mens Veterans Final, Chris Ponulak defeated Peter Sargent 6-0, 6-0.

For a detailed report on these two matches, read the October article in the Farnborough Local (click on your left).

We are expecting the remaining Finals to be played soon.

We have hit the front page of the newspapers!

In 2015, FTC was 40 years old. To celebrate our 40th anniversary a special Dinner was held on Saturday Evening, 3rd October, at Cherry Lodge Golf Club in Biggin Hill. Current members were joined by many former members, including several who were there at the very beginning of the Club's history. Our thanks go especially to Margaret Gooden and her family for organising the event. Margaret and her late husband Colin Shakspeare were two of the founder members back in 1975.
